"Finally," he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. The letter was found hidden behind a loose floorboard in the attic. His father was a man of few words, so this letter was something he did not expect. The paper crinkled in his grasp. The words, addressed to his father's superiors, spoke of "a growing sense of detachment" and a "loss of enthusiasm." It described a man slowly giving up.

He felt the familiar knot tighten in his stomach. The endless meetings, the demanding clients, the looming deadlines. He stared at the letter, feeling a creeping sense of inevitability.
